For beginning drum students, I typically like to start with the Percussive Arts Society sheet of rudiments to ensure a solid technical background as the student progresses. After that, we move on to simple reading and other drumming fundamental concepts including limb coordination, fills, phrasing and articulation, etc. With older students, I find it helpful to try and begin with what they are interested and comfortable in playing. My main goal is to keep lessons relevant for every student, and to provide an individual plan for each student. I choose a teaching method that is geared toward the student's learning style and personality - and especially age. There's nothing worse than using a method for children with a teen or adult! Right from the start I will supplement the method book with fun and engaging pieces. I'm trying to put each student in touch with their inner creative. Everyone learns at a different pace and my approach is to teach something to mastery level rather than fill a quota. Inspiration and the joy of playing is first and foremost with my approach. By breaking difficult passages down into digestable pieces and making attainable goals, I find this keeps the student interested and builds confidence to overcome weaknesses. Read More

I love teaching, and I do so with both encouragement and humor. I realize that not everyone can is able or willing to practice six hours a day, so I work with each student individually to find their pace. I am happy teaching both competitive students (I have had several students participate successfully in the ABRSM exams) and students who play purely for enjoyment.
