Overview:
I am percussionist, composer and educator, Larry Q. Draughn Jr. I've been "banging on stuff" and trying to understand rhythm for most of my life. The first 16 years of my journey were self taught and the past 13 have been supplemented with formalized training. I've shared the stage with greats like Jimmy Heath, Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, and Christian McBride to name a few. My gift has and is taking me all around the world. I've done festivals and club dates in Italy, Africa, China and Fiji, as well as the standard working around the continental United States. I have original music in the Kennedy Centers Archive of Music, have done commericals for ESPN's Black History Month and are on 12 albums to date. Music is a passion of mine and I hope to share it with as many who will listen.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience has been for as long as I've been playing. Before studying any particular type of pedagogical approach, I've always had the gift and desire to share what I know with others. Formalized study has simply given me specific nomenclature for things. Having said that, my pedagogical approach is simple...discern how the student learns and give them the information clearly in that fashion. There are some people who are very literal and need specific details, whereas there are some who work well with general instruction and prefer to feel things out viscerally. I speak fluently with both approaches and use both techniques to acheive clarity for the student.
METHODS USED
I create my own lesson plans (and some materials) specific to each student. Some standard books I use are Alfred's Drum Method book 1, The New Breed, Portraits in Rhythm, The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary to name a few. The books are necessary for developing music literacy, however I remind students that the pages don't make sound!!! Developing a discerning ear is paramount in my approach. Therefore we do a lot of listening and I engage students in dialogue for them to develop a personalized mental image of what they are trying to play.
LESSON STYLE
I'm trying to put each student in touch with their inner creative. Everyone learns at a different pace and my approach is to teach something to mastery level rather than fill a quota. Inspiration and the joy of playing is first and foremost with my approach. By breaking difficult passages down into digestable pieces and making attainable goals, I find this keeps the student interested and builds confidence to overcome weaknesses. I am also a full time elementary school music teacher. Teaching at that level has helped me condense complex concepts and communicate more efficiently.

I really appreciate Larry' s ability to adapt to Ethan. Ethan is 7 years old and is high functioning Autistic. I like that Larry is aware of Ethan's difference yet he encourages Ethan without kid gloves! Love that Larry was inspired to create a beat based on the way Ethan holds the drum sticks when he is using his feet to play the symbols. Larry is reliable . Ethan likes to do his own thing when it comes to percussion . Larry miraculously finds the way to let Ethan be himself while infusing lessons! Improvisation and prearranged learning at its best! Not only is Larry teaching Ethan how to play but also he his teaching him how to handle and care for his instrument. Like how to tune , break down and cover when done. Good stuff and cool beans! I highly recommend Larry.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
