My goal is to unleash the students' quest for beauty and creativity.  I explain thoroughly the music that the student is working on and we practice together.  For those who want to practice more at home, I provide clear guidelines.  I have a special program for adult students who enjoy playing duet pieces together with me and works for two pianos.

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with The Accent on Achievement book series by John O'Reilly and Mark Williams. These books have helped me explain music notation in a clear, concise manner. My students have flourished because of this approach. A few of my students were accepted into performing arts high schools and became professional musicians because of this approach.

The first thing I do with a student usually is find out what his goals are in learning to play guitar and what he wants to do and what kind of music he likes. From there I start going over some of the basic terminology as that is a very vital and crucial part understanding music in general and it will definitely make a huge difference later on as he's learning guitar. Then from there I see what the student actually needs to do first according to where he is at. On learning guitar, what is focused on depends on what each student may have struggles in playing, so we would focus on those things but also strengthen the strong points. Even for beginners some are strong in certain areas and weak in other areas. I use the time that we have together very wisely and ensure that I don't leave the lesson with you confused about anything at all ever! That's my number one policy; to ensure that the student understands everything that we went over before I leave.

The break down for each instrument I teach:  For beginning children violin/viola students, I combine Mimi Zweig's IU String Academy method with Suzuki School training. However, I add in my own emphasis on ten minutes set aside in every lesson for learning to read notes, and for theory and ear training (Yes, even at 6 years old! We work on hearing intervals and naming them).  For beginning children piano students I use Dozen a Day, Bastien, Suzuki, and my own method. Children will learn scales right away from an early age, but will also play fun songs. If my students are young, I incorporate educational games into the lesson specifically for keeping focus. For adult students or teenagers, I tailor more to their needs and individual personalities and requests. This often includes more complex pieces, some Scottish fiddling, and lots of etudes for technique building!

In addition to drum set, I also teach djembe (West African), bodhran (Celtic), doumbek (Middle Eastern) and conga (Afro-Cuban).  My favorite thing about teaching is watching students develop into creative musicians and finding their own voice. My playing and teaching has always been based in tradition, but not bound by it.  I have found that keeping a relaxed, fun atmosphere during lessons allows students to learn at their own pace. When the student is relaxed learning is fun, easier and they progress in natural way.
