My greastest reward is seeing each student develop a greater love of music as they progress and come to be able to express their personal feelings through music. It is important that each student progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals at each lesson. By acknowledging their accomplishments this helps build a desire to progress and makes students eager to learn more. By helping them learn how to use the hand, wrist, arm and upper torso, they learn tone control and musical phrasing. Read More

For beginning students, we always start with how to hold the instrument, parts of the instrument and string names, and then begin playing open strings. This may take a few lessons. Placing the left hand fingers is usually the last step before playing an A scale and then Twinkle. Setting a foundation is more important than going quickly, so many of my students spend a number of months on Twinkle before starting to move more quickly with Lightly Row. Read More

Seeing students' excitement and passion are among the most fulfilling experiences a teacher can have. I like to focus on fostering steady growth by catering to the students as individuals and work toward their ultimate goal of learning the guitar for whatever purpose they intend to fulfill. I like to keep lessons as open as possible for students to feel free to ask any question they like and for them to feel as though they can learn what aspects they'd like to hone in on, all the while instilling good habits like constant practice. I think of two things as being central to my teaching style: Fun, and Growth. I think too many music lessons dry out the material, and suck the fun out of something that should be inherently joyful! I try to make every music lesson interesting, and keep my students engaged by giving them material that gets them hyped. Second, I think music is a great chance for people to experience the joy in Growth. Read More

I said yes. I started lesson at 6 with a local teacher that would come around to all the kids in my neighborhood. I took lesson for 6 years and then went on to explore sports. At 18 I went back to my guitar and relearned by myself all the lessons I had gone through. I also started taking lesson at a local music store and I attended the college of San Mateo and took 4 semesters of Theory and musicianship. Read More

For younger students fundamentals are essential. I would start with things such as rudiments, and coordination exercises. These are the things that everything in drumming is built from, so everything else will come naturally and easier. For the older students I would find out their experience level and work around their strengths and interest. I would show them things that a professional musician is expected to know, such as being able to play simple to complex grooves with good time. Read More

These books are designed to have students start off with easier pieces and gets harder as we move on. It is up to the students to practice in order for them to get better! From here, the next part is to find songs that students want to learn. Many people prefer teaching students classical music, because it is rigorous, well respected, and will allow them to excel. However, I am a person that prefers a student to pick songs that they enjoy or a songs that they are motivated to practice! Read More
