Instruments: Drums
I am a talented drummer looking to kick-start my career in music instruction. Now that I'm retired I have the time to follow something I've always wanted to do - to give back to the music community my experience as a working musician. With my leadership abilities and knowledge can create engaging lessons, with fun and insightful activities. I have been playing rock, funk, jazz and Latin on and off since 1976 - yeah, I might be older, but I'm still young at heart and can rock the house on any given night. Read More

Drawing a grand staff and then drawing notes on the staff help the student understand how music is written. Once basic theory is introduced, I look for music that I hope the student will enjoy playing. I know that there is music I love to play and music I would rather not play. It is important to find at least once piece that the student really likes and looks forward to playing. Read More

I believe in Keeping it Fun! We get to play. Playing is a big part of the creative process, in that it involves experimenting and finding new ideas, thoughts, and processes that work best for each individual and that will lead to the perfect practice and the excitement of performance. When a student is ready, I will encourage them to do some suggested performing opportunities. Nothing is more thrilling to me and sometimes emotional, than to see one of my students progress to the point of loving music as much as I do, and to go on and spread the good to all those who will listen. Chelso's method of teaching is now my method. Since I was intermediate when he taught me, he gave a performance on the song he wanted me to play and make my own through alternate chord changes. I would do the same with intermediate and advanced students. My early teachers started me on easy songs with finger exercises, especially how to play contrapuntally on the bass side. This is how I would teach the beginner. Read More

I'm actually very flexible with the methods or books for all of the instruments I teach. Generally, for the band instruments, the director picks the method book. Most of the modern ones are pretty good to get students started, so I'm fine sticking to the director's method of choice and gleaning all the musical gems we can from it. Similarly with piano, there are several great method books out there, and you can learn a lot about piano from any of them. Read More
