I involve a lot of kinesthetic movement based lessons along with visual and aural aids. I get to know the type of learner my student is and then plan my instruction to fit their learning style. I have various teaching styles that I adapt based on the individual I am teaching. Some people learn best through visual and auditory methods, while others require written instructions. I am comfortable teaching in both styles, but I have noticed that most individuals learn best through hands-on experience. For beginner clarinetists, we will begin working out of the Voxman/Gower Beginner Method Book. We will spend the majority of the first lessons learning posture, holding the instrument, proper embouchure, blowing into the clarinet, breathing techniques, articulation, and how to develop sound through long tones and exercises. I've had the opportunity to play with other musicians in band and studio settings; my particular favorite project was with a violinist who had performed in Carnegie Hall.
