I have been privately teaching since 2012, primarily teaching high school students in between classes in college. In 2017 I was offered a Graduate Teaching Assistantship from Florida State University, where I was assigned eight students and two saxophone quartets, as well as teaching the saxophone portion of the Woodwind Fundamentals class that was offered. I start out with the basics: Major Jazz Scales, Mixolydian Scales, and Minor Scales, Teaching students the importance of playing long tones is constantly enforced . Simultaneously, students learn how to outline the Blues, and transcribe solos. For more advance students, I teach jazz phrasing, intermediate jazz song outlining and jazz enclosures. I am very focused when teaching but I try not to bore the student with repetitive exercises, varying the material constantly, depending on the student. Some students are more focused than others and they're able to endure greater amounts of effort into a single task. In the beginning there is a kind of audition to determine wether the student will follow through a theoretical way of teaching, by using musical terminology, or a more intuitive kind, by using tablature and listening. I've been playing bass for over 30 years and still love picking it up to learn new songs, styles and various approaches to the instrument and the song. I enjoy teaching students and seeing the satisfaction from them as they get better and progress in their playing. I love tailoring each lesson to each individual student I teach. It is important to me that my students are interested in the material that they are learning. I enjoy helping my students reach their musical goals by selecting repertoires that appeal to them while also helping to address and resolve their technical deficiencies. For my beginning piano students, I typically start with Faber's Piano Adventures. For young singers, I use the Kodaly Method as a way of developing musical skills and teaching musical concepts. For beginning students, I use Faber and Faber's Piano Adventures, which offers a variety of supplemental material to encourage a variety of styles. As a musician who values both classical music and improvisation, I teach my students how to use chord sheets very soon after they begin to read music. As their skills increase, so will the variety of music I introduce based on their interest. Since I quit piano at one point around age 10, I empathize with struggling students and try to make music as fun and accessible as possible to help them truly grow a lifelong love of music! Read More
