My goal with each student is to teach the fundamentals of the violin/viola, and especially how to practice in an organized way. At the beginning of a lesson, I like to begin with something fun that the student has been working on. This could be a performance piece, some improvisational composition, or another activity related to the piano. As we go along, I like to branch into the theory behind what we are doing. Once they have a firm grasp on the basics, I like to begin students fairly quickly into learning the circle of fourths, and the scales and chords following the order of the circle of fourths. I started teaching privately in 2010 as part of a class assignment, and discovered I really enjoy doing it. I also love teaching and conducting choirs and have done that in various capacities for the past several years. I really believe that singing in choir is the best vocal training for young students. Choral singing and solo singing do not have to be opposite worlds! Both can be done healthily, and I like helping students discover this, or even just discover a new hobby. Read More

I encourage my students to practice smart instead of long. This is especially important for young students. I teach my students to self-evaluate their own playing. When difficult areas are recognized, this is where the practicing focus should be. Above all, music should be enjoyable! Hard work disguised as FUN is my goal. I am great at giving positive feedback.
