Based on this, I often try to identify the techniques used in the songs that the student likes and whenever possible, we work on the technical part applied to a given song. I have taught siblings in a class type setting. I have taught preschoolers at preschool. I have taught Little Mozarts to little ones. I use music in the homes already, sometimes I provide things from the 50s that my aunt and uncle scribbled in: leila Fletcher, Edna Mae Burnam, classical composers-mozart, debussy, chopan, clementi, beethoven, bach. It's important to me that students enjoy what they are singing--if they don't, they won't be motivated, are less likely to practice, and they won't progress as quickly. Still, I believe students should sing a variety of literature (and may even find something they didn't know they enjoyed), and regularly start beginning students with some simple Italian art songs.
