The flute is my passion, I hope to pass it on to others! I have played the flute and piccolo for 26 years. I performed in the U.S. Army Band for 8 years and I have a Bachelor's in Music Education with an emphasis in flute performance. I have performed all over the U.S. and Japan, as well as in France and the Philippines. I am very skilled at playing the piccolo, and if that interests you, I can really help you shine. Whether you are a serious musician or playing for the joy of it, I will do all I can to make playing the flute a rewarding experience and help you reach your full potential!
I first began teaching flute when I volunteered at the local high school to teach flute sectionals. I also took on some beginning students and taught private lessons for about 2 years before placing my focus on my studies while attending college. My goal as your flute instructor is not only to help you improve your skills, but to help make the flute an enjoyable experience! I find great joy in passing on my love for the flute and watching my students flourish. My teaching method is to hone their skills by learning scales, methods, classical repertoire, and more, with a focus on consistent practice and performance opportunities. I am also more than happy to help you learn to play your favorite music and songs that you would like to learn, of any genre! I encourage you to bring your own music, and it would be my pleasure to teach to your interests. I find my students make the biggest stride when first, learning music that motivates them and challenges their current abilities, and second, preparing for a performance -- whether it be a recital, solo ensemble festival, band concert, etc. Through lessons I will help you improve your tone and musical skills to help you gain confidence in your playing ability. For beginner students, I typically start with Rubank Elemetary Method for Flute. However, if you have a different method book, I am happy to teach using that book, if I find it to be a credible source. For intermediate to advanced students, I prefer to use the Rubank Advanced Method Books 1 & 2, but again, if you have your own books, if I approve, we can use those books instead. I will be flexible with you and teach to your skills and experience with method books and repertoire that will help you improve your technique. My goal is not only help you improve your skills, but to make the flute fun at the same time!
My approach to teaching will largely depend on your age, experience, and goals for playing the flute. At each lesson, we will set attainable goals and discuss effective practicing methods. As I stated above, I am flexible for teaching as far as which method books and repertoire to learn. No matter what age or skill level, I find that tonal exercises, scales, and etudes to be paramount in helping students to improve their flute playing skills. As you practice these things, you will gain skills needed to reach your potential and make playing the flute more enjoyable. I look forward to working with you!
