I was a member of the Penn State Marching Blue Band and have participated in several Alumni Blue Band performances since graduating. I went on to earn my Masters of Music in Music Education from Northwestern University in 2012. I enjoyed teaching music in the public school for ten years. I joined the school band in 5th grade, but soon quit, as I was distracted in school and it was a little too academic. With all my students, I will always take interest in what they want to learn. I want to make their experience as fun as mine was when I first began. So knowing my students' musical inclinations is important to my methods, because it gives me a direction in which to apply my instruction. My younger students will start with the basic rhythm rudiments and reading notated percussion music. I pay special attention to the students' reactions and guide them from there because passion for the instrument is the top priority, and is the fuel to keep a musician going whether it is for a career or a hobby. I start by giving the student trivial assignments, but will quickly ramp it up to find their limits. I will provide students with diagrams on what is called guitar tablature, which is the easiest way to read music for guitar, for various chords and scales. Students will be able to play songs and guitar riffs by their favorite bands as well as create their own music and even create their own guitar solos and improvise over chords.
