Instruments: Piano Voice Violin Viola Keyboard
Excellent, nurturing Suzuki violin pedagogy - treating music as a mother tongue to absorb, imitate, and engage with - informs my methods for beginning and intermediate students. Gradually, as the student shows readiness, we blend in the traditional yet humane study of expert violin playing and thoughtful musicianship modeled for me in Dorothy DeLay's masterclass. As distinct from many string players, I am also a devoted and accomplished singer. So breathing, posture, phrasing, color, line, and articulation are key to my approaches to making and teaching music, and thus to helping my students x22singx22 through their playing. Read More
Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Ukulele
I feel like I have a very loose teaching style that is grounded in the fundamentals. I do not put deadlines or timelines on any student's progress, and I also realize that each student's needs are unique to each and every person. I work to give each and every student a very solid understanding of music (being able to sit at a piano or pick up a horn and play music, be able to recognize and understand the theoretical aspects of music, aurally discern chord progression and when a wrong not is played to understand why chords move they way they do and be able to easily hear your own musitakes). Instruments: Drums
I have been teaching drums for 3 years and have found that teaching book work, but keeping it light and fun is a great way to keep students engaged and motivated. If the student isn't having fun then I am not doing my job. I both play and teach many different styles and can give advice on drum kits and cymbals, sticks, tuning and more. We will go over things like technique, rudiments etc while also learning songs, melody and song structure. Read More
Instruments: Piano Voice
Because the voice is the only instrument we cannot see with the naked eye, voice lessons must be extremely interactive. I believe in catering each lesson towards the goals of the individual student. I also believe in the collaboration of teacher and student. I am always asking students opinions or reactions on what we work on in the lesson. I want to empower my students at every level to become more aware of their instrument to the point that they can eventually become their own teacher to a certain extent. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice Saxophone
My teaching experience began in my post undergraduate college days. After graduation, I began studying at a studio called Jazz Improv with a Master's level instructor. One of his students asked for a saxophone teacher and the party was referred to me. I was then able to obtain a second saxophone student; I have also had two piano students when teaching. I enjoyed teaching music and it is something I look forward to getting back to as I attempted to acquire students on my own with minimal success. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Bass Guitar
For younger beginners I tend to use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series to build a foundation of basic knowledge and fundamental techniques. From there I tend to focus on a custom lesson plan entailing a combination of music/exercises I believe the student will benefit from and enjoy coupled with whatever the student them self wishes to learn whether it's a genre of music, a specific song or something else. Instruments: Piano Flute
I use the following method books, depending on the age and ability of the student: Alfred, Bastian and John Thompson. For younger students (under eight years old) I usually use the Alfred all in one book.. for older children, I use the Bastian set of four books: piano performance, technic and theory. For adults and teenagers, I use the Alfred all in one adult method book. For gifted students, I use the John Thompson book (the one I learned from). Read More
