For beginning drum students, I typically like to start with the Percussive Arts Society sheet of rudiments to ensure a solid technical background as the student progresses. After that, we move on to simple reading and other drumming fundamental concepts including limb coordination, fills, phrasing and articulation, etc. With older students, I find it helpful to try and begin with what they are interested and comfortable in playing. I have taught kids from ages 9 to fourteen, and am open to teaching anyone of any skill level. I also offer lessons in composition and recording/engineering music production. I encourage regular practice and make sure, especially for kids, that they leave every lesson with something new. I focus on learning how to be a successful musician all around, emphasizing on good technique, performance, and each student's individual sound. Each lesson plan I create varies from student to student. During the first lesson I have with a new student, I asses what they know, and what they would like to learn. I then teach the necessary building blocks in order to reach certain goals that the student and I set in a timely manner. Watching a student find the joy in playing music, makes my job immensely rewarding. I therefore am a positive teacher who tries to celebrate the best about every performance - including sight reading and scales! It’s also important to set realistic goals for every lesson and achievable practice goals between lessons. Since every student learns at a different pace these are understandably individual goals. As time went on through my undergraduate studies, I had a studio of twenty lessons students. Coupled with private lessons, I gained experience teaching high school percussion ensembles and I was a percussion instructor for marching bands. What drives my passion for teaching is the collaborative atmosphere and those "a-ha!" moments when a lightbulb goes off. Learning is all about the act of discovery, and I facilitate students in finding their natural love of music. I challenge students to approach problems from all angles to help them understand music on a deeper level.
