I personally practice SOVT, where we start with light humming, use a semi-occluded means of vocalizing (such as lip trills or a straw in water) to gradually warm-up the vocal cords and bring the breath under the voice for adequate support. Then we move on to actual vocalizations. Over several lessons, we work on a chosen piece together and begin building repertoire appropriate to the singer. My experience as a teacher spans from advanced college students working on technique and improvisation, all the way to helping beginners play their first notes on the trombone. Before relocating to LA, I was on faculty at the University of Texas Arlington and taught jazz trombone lessons, ensembles, and brass pedagogy. Trombone fundamentals take a lot of time given that students must build actual muscle strength in addition to learning to read music and understanding the instrument.
