If a student has something specific they want to work on and are focused on that, I will guide them along, helping them with technique, feel, or anything else. However, if what they want is more broad, (e.g. they want to be a better musician in a certain genre), then I will take a more hands-on approach. For example, to help them improve on playing within a certain genre, I would give them transcriptions from the musicians in that genre, but also have them choose their own musicians to transcribe in that genre. Having grown up the second oldest of five siblings, I understand how to relate to other people and work with them even in difficult situations. For beginning students I usually start with basic chord formation to get them into playing songs as soon as possible so they dont get bored with the basics. Then I move onto movable chords, scales, and music theory. Once they get to more advanced techniques I will give them simple exercises and the songs they choose to learn will put them into context. I begin all students on snare drum. This allows for the proper development of hand technique that is the base of percussion. I teach the original 26 rudiments along with the Breeze Easy method books for beginners, or students that do not read music.
