Overview:
Hi! I’m Mallory Phillips, and I’m a violinist and teacher based in North Carolina. I have a Master’s degree in Violin Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Bachelor’s degree from Converse College, where I graduated summa cum laude. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to perform with a number of orchestras, including the North Carolina Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, Greensboro Symphony, and the Spartanburg Philharmonic, where I also appeared as a soloist.
In addition to performing, teaching is a huge part of my musical life. I’ve been teaching private violin lessons for over ten years and love helping students build a strong foundation, develop their confidence, and enjoy the process of learning music. I’ve worked with students of all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced high school and college players, and I tailor my approach to each student’s unique learning style and goals.
I’ve also been fortunate to study with and learn from many inspiring teachers and artists over the years, and I bring that experience into my own teaching. My goal is always to create a supportive, structured, and encouraging environment where students feel empowered to grow and explore music at their own pace.
Whether you’re picking up the violin for the first time or preparing for an audition, I’m excited to help you on your musical journey!
EXPERIENCE
Teaching violin has been one of the most meaningful parts of my musical journey. I’ve been teaching privately for over ten years, working with students of all ages and levels—from young beginners just learning to hold the instrument, to advanced students preparing for auditions and competitions.
My goal as a teacher is to help students develop a strong technical foundation while also nurturing their individual musical voice. I believe that everyone can learn to play the violin with the right support, structure, and encouragement. My lessons are tailored to each student’s unique learning style, and I strive to create a calm, thoughtful, and positive learning environment where students feel both challenged and supported.
Over the years, I’ve also led sectionals for high school and college orchestras, coached youth ensembles, and worked as a teaching assistant at the university level. These experiences have deepened my understanding of how students learn and how to adapt my approach to help them succeed.
I love watching students grow in both skill and confidence, and I’m passionate about making violin study both rewarding and enjoyable. Whether a student wants to pursue music seriously or is simply learning for fun, I find great joy in guiding their progress and sharing my love of music with them.
METHODS USED
I use a variety of different methods and I tailor my curriculum to each individual student, offering you a personalized approach that is unique to your personality and learning style. I teach repertoire from the Suzuki Violin School and Barbara Barber's Solos for Young Violinists, I also like to incorporate other styles if the student is interested, such as fiddle and bluegrass, and even pop and Disney songs. I also use etude and scale books to help build and enhance certain techniques, such as Wolfhart Etudes, Barber Barber Scales for Young Violinist, Carl Flesch Scale System, etc., depending on the level and individual needs of the student.
LESSON STYLE
I like to create a relaxed and welcoming environment, and my students have commented on my approachability and my ability to create a nonjudgemental environment. Private lessons should be a place where students feel comfortable experimenting with what they have learned and being open to always learning new things without the fear of making a mistake. I help my students build a strong technical foundation so they have the freedom to express their creativity and play the songs that they have dreamed of playing, without any technical setbacks getting in their way. Learning an instrument is a challenging experience, but should also be fun and rewarding.
