I began teaching small private lessons 6 years ago to 2 or 3 students part time in college at Spartanburg Community College. I encourage frequent practice on a regular schedule for all my students, seeing progress helps maintain enjoyment and develop passion for your instrument. I find that introductions into a variety of styles can really go far in developing your own unique sound! Music for me is all about having fun and letting your personality shine through the music you play, if its not fun then Im doing something wrong. Read More

When it comes to working with students, I feel that i am very easy to work with. I try to encourage my students to practice and love to see them progress from week to week. I also understand that learning new things can be frustrating at times, and help them work over the lessons they are having difficulty with. For beginning students I strongly suggest they practice for at least 15 minutes a day, but would prefer they practice 30. Read More

I like to follow a format for lessons, giving a certain amount of time to warming up, practicing technical studies and scales, etudes or lessons, solo literature and ensemble (duet, trio, ensemble) literature. I would encourage students to make an agenda for practicing, I believe many student need to learn how to practice, much like study skills, so they can make good use of their time. I teach students how to mark their music, how to break apart difficult sections and how to set goals for each week. Read More

My musical background is a combination of music performance and music education. As a professional music educator both at secondary Level (middle school high school) and the college level, I strive to focus on the musical aspects of my teaching. Two of my degrees are in Music Education with an emphasis in Performance and I believe in combining both the educational aspects of learning with the performance aspects of learning. Read More

Besides teaching in the Austrian school system I performed in chamber music groups and had solo tours of southern Austria. When I came back to the States I earned my masters in band/music instruction from Syracuse University. I have also performed with my group; 2 flutes and cello all around Central NY. I was member of the CNY Flute ensemble for years until COVID. The Video posted is of me performing with the SY pep band for Christmas for the rescue mission. Read More

I like to talk with my students and / or their parents, and discover what their desired end result is, or their interests. I then tailor my lesson to meet their needs. Sometimes, as you are going along in your lessons, you learn more about your student, and can make adjustments. Depending on age and level, I'll make sure they know everything from proper care and holding of the instrument to theory. I have many materials to take from, and have worked with such authors as Mel Bay and Bunny Brunel, to name a couple. Read More
