The road to it is to raise their awareness of a bigger context. No matter if we play a concerto, a clarinet duet, or are part of a jazz ensemble, we are always part of a bigger picture. In providing another voice for the students – by playing counter point for example – and helping them over time to do the same, supporting me in any kind of music, is a great tool to feel the mutual pulse, to develop a strong sense of time and rhythm even if there is no rhythm section around. I have been told that I am a very energetic and encouraging teacher - I want my students to succeed and to be happy in their singing! I defintely will not stay seated behind the piano for the entire lesson. I like to get up and get involved! I won't ask students to try anything that I won't demonstrate myself first, which I have found usually puts them at ease (this is especially true with children and teens.) I have been a voice student myself for many years, so I know how it feels to be in their shoes, and I try to be as constructive and encouraging as possible while helping them discover their voice. I began my journey as a mentor and teacher as a camp counselor back when I was in High School. Since then, I have developed my teaching style and experience through offering private and group music lessons in after school programs, music studios, and middle schools across Massachusetts. From 2013-2015 I went back to school for my masters in Community Music Education, where I studied traditional and experiential learning, progressive and alternative education, as well as arts administration and childhood development. For those who are just starting on an instrument, I usually focus on basic technique. Bass and guitar are both physical instruments in their own way, and getting acclimated to the feel of it is key to having success on it. For bass, I typically teach out of the Suzuki book series, while as for guitar, I use the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, however, I am happy to teach whatever method a student or their parents feel strongly about. I started teaching guitar and bass in 2001. I started teaching ukulele in 2013. Over the years, I have taught professionally at schools, park districts and music stores- in most cases becoming the top teacher (meaning, I was the most requested and had the best enrollment longevity). When I realized my ability to teach and how perfect it felt for me, I never looked back. In 2006, I opened a music venue/recording studio that was open to all ages- closing 9 years later in 2015.
