My goal is for the student to have fun and participate in the direction of their education while learning important theory and repertoire from the canon. For beginner students, I like the Rubank methods volumes 1 and 2 for fundamentals. This will be supported through tone development exercises and etudes for technique. I will introduce serious music as soon as possible commensurate with ability. Adults will be encouraged to follow their own interests, but with a continued eye on the fundamentals and canonic literature. Read More

I began my journey as a mentor and teacher as a camp counselor back when I was in High School. Since then, I have developed my teaching style and experience through offering private and group music lessons in after school programs, music studios, and middle schools across Massachusetts. From 2013-2015 I went back to school for my masters in Community Music Education, where I studied traditional and experiential learning, progressive and alternative education, as well as arts administration and childhood development. I begin with the fundamentals of music theory that you will need to begin playing your instrument, and then I like to get straight into learning songs as quickly as possible. The student may choose what songs to learn (recommended) or I can make suggestions. You will learn a range of skills including tuning, instrument care, song struture, chords, soloing, and MUCH MORE. My goal is for you not just to learn to play certain notes or chords, but also understand why that note or chord fits where it does. Read More

I've been teaching guitar and general music lessons since high school, where I would assist the music teacher in guitar and theory classes because of my advanced skill level. During my undergraduate studies in college, I put myself through school teaching private lessons in my home and at various music stores, churches, and performing arts schools, teaching around 200 students in 5 years. When I went back to school to get my masters degree, I was awarded an assistantship and taught music theory, music appreciation, jazz ensembles, and jazz improvisiation at the university, in addition to keeping a robust private guitar studio on the side. The road to it is to raise their awareness of a bigger context. No matter if we play a concerto, a clarinet duet, or are part of a jazz ensemble, we are always part of a bigger picture. In providing another voice for the students – by playing counter point for example – and helping them over time to do the same, supporting me in any kind of music, is a great tool to feel the mutual pulse, to develop a strong sense of time and rhythm even if there is no rhythm section around. My teaching style is firm yet easygoing and fun..I expect the student to have practiced and be ready to play their homework back to me. I use repetition quite a bit but that's the best way, I find, that someone learns. I also encourage them to investigate and practice things that have not necessarily been assigned in order to see how serious they are. In other words, when they're not practicing what I show them, I expect them to experiment and investigate the fretboard on their own and then if they do come across something cool, then we can build off that Read More

Hello, my name is Gerald. I'm a professional drummer/educator originally from Norfolk, VA but I've been residing in New Orleans, LA since 2016. I graduated with my bachelor's degree in music production from Norfolk State University and my master's degree in jazz education/performance from Florida State University. I moved to New Orleans to pursue my musical career because of the history of great music in the city and by the recommendation of my FSU professor (Leon Anderson) who also was a jazz drummer in New Orleans for many years.
