I typically start by first assessing whether or not the student has any prior experience in musical training, whether that be in a private instrument, music theory, or just some experience gained from taking music classes at school. From there I develop a curriculum tailored to both the student's current level of musical knowledge as well as what interests them. When teaching and assigning homework and repertoire, I like to offer a balance between what the student wants to learn and the essential exercises that will expand the student's musical knowledge, abilities and muscle memory. As a teacher I strive to discover with the student the most effective ways to practice so that musical goals are obtained in a way that is engaging and exciting for the student. As a bass teacher, I like to identify what the student needs to improve on and find the way to get them to have that "aha moment", whenthey figure out that they can play anything as difficult as it may be with the right guidance and the right tools when practicing.
