In teaching my students, I prefer to teach them to "play by ear", because when they learn chords and songs, they are usually able to play a snog by memory after hearing it a time or two. I not only show them the chords, fret board, how to hold the guitar properly, how to tune the guitar; etc. but, I also issue them handouts of guitar chord illustrations, fret board charts, and chord changes with words to songs for them to practice on between lessons. Depending on my student's age and skill level I usually have them begin with Suzuki books, Essential Elements books, or a combination of the two. As students advance I often incorporate etudes and/or exercises by Lee, Dotzauer, Galamian, Mooney, Sevcik, Duport, and Popper. While ear training is an essential skill that I teach to all of my students, the younger a student is the more I'll have them "play by ear" instead of reading sheet music. Read More

For players just starting out, I always start with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements book. It is a good place to learn the notes, as well as how to read music on necessary. As a trumpet player, I am a firm believer in the Arban Complete Comservatory Method, and Clarke Technical Studies. These are the backbone of my fundamentals. For beginners or people that are brand new to the guitar we typically break the lesson into halves. The first half is typically practicing pentatonic scales and basic finger exercises and maybe some rhythm drills before moving onto simplified versions of famous classic songs.
