Each student is different, and therefore requires their own personal curriculum. The first questions from teacher to students should always be, "What is it that makes you want to play", "What kind of music interests you the most", and "What do you hope to accomplish musically". Some people only want to learn a little, others want to go all the way. By asking these questions, one can understand what drives the student to play, and establish a personalized fun and effective curriculum. Read More

For all students it is essential that they grasp the fundamentals, doing this well be invaluable in the future and so ensuring correct technique, solid time and feel are important to me. With all students I want them to have fun whilst learning so finding out what music interests them is important as lessons can be centred around what they like. No matter the age or ability the emphasis on learning whilst enjoying is key. Read More

I am a professional level violinist who has been playing for almost ten years. I started my internship in my junior year of high school as a middle school orchestra assistant and I have enjoyed teaching ever since. I am a current student at the University of North Florida where I am studying Music Education and participating in the UNF Orchestra. We, as an orchestra, have had multiple opportunities to travel and play with other groups and in places of high respect. Read More

I like to start by exploring where the student is at in their musical education and what they are looking to study in private lessons. From there, we build the lesson around them! Once we’ve established where to begin, I’ll ask the student to choose a piece they’d like to perform and I’ll assign them a piece of my own choice as well. For my classical students I'll typically start with art song repertoire and for musical theatre I'll choose a classic piece. Read More

I've found the best way to teach is to cater to each student's interest. While early or beginning players may require some fundamental grunt work, there is always a way to assure that it's fun too. Earlier students would need to start learning the basics: rhythm, learning to read, developing technique through scales etc. of which there are many methods. As students mature, I feel the Suzuki method for aspiring classical students is the best route (there are multiple books in this series) along with some other extensive and more challenging works.
