For beginner piano students, I have two methods books that I use. For young children, I use the Bastion Piano Basics series. It is colorful, fun, and exciting for young learners. It is also very informative, so parents can help their young ones practice if they need the help! My first teaching experiences were with my father during solo and ensemble. Having hired me as an accompanist for his students, I found myself rehearsing these students moreso than accompanying them. From that point I felt encouraged to teach and help others perfect their craft. My biggest influences would have to be my past teachers, one of which taught me younger and the other as I matured. I believe that while learning to read and write sheet music, developing technique and feel, and understanding music theory are all important, the most integral part of learning an instrument - as fundamental as it sounds - is to use your ears! I then studied music theory so I could write better music. It cleared up the missing links from my "self taught" days and set the pace for me as a musician. I joined a local cover band, soon formed it into an original project, and through the transformation realized I was writing the music, and teaching my bandmates theory that in turn, made us a great jam band and gave me the freedom to always know where I am on the fretboard.
