I know that every student has different aspirations as to why he or she wants to learn to play an instrument. The advantage of one-on-one lessons compared to a class with a set curriculum is that the lessons are catered to one student. I strive to put together lesson plans catered to each student—lesson plans that have students playing the music they enjoy as well as learning the necessary music fundamentals to become musicians. I usually use the Faber, Beyer, or Czerny depend on the student's level. I'd add Hanon, bach 2,3 part invention, Sonatina album, and the list can go on. For Jazz, all I need is manuscript paper and a Jazz Real Book (I'd hand out some exercise notes). For advanced students, I want them to listen to music a lot. I have created a curriculum which is comprised of the Suzuki series for Violin, the String Builder Series by Samuel Applebaum; the Introducing the Positions-Volumes I & 2 and Scale studies by Harvey S. Whistler. Music theory is taught using the Master Theory Series by Charles S.Peters and Paul Yoder. Additional Etudes that focus on Bowings, and Double Stops are taught to the more advanced student.
