I have been teaching guitar to people of all ages and abilities for the past 7 years and believe that NO ONE is untalented and EVERYONE can learn. I believe the key to enjoying the guitar and expressing yourself on the guitar is to make the technique of playing the guitar easy and fluent. In my studio I emphasize making the technique easy in repertoire and exercises appropriate for the level of the student. Read More

I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I believe in writing down notes that help students understand what they are learning, exactly what students should practice, and setting goals for their practice and overall progress. Read More

I like to have my students progress to a point where they feel comfortable picking a song of their choice, transcribing it as accurately as possible, and playing it. For advanced students: there is no set structure for advanced students, as their requests and sets of strengths and weaknesses are so individually specific that I have to create a specific lesson plan for each student. However, one theme that I love to introduce advanced musicians to in terms of music theory are the psycho-acoustics and emotional manipulation of specific chord progressions, modes, cadences, and modal interchange. I'm a firm believer in reading music, no matter what style of guitar you want to play. As someone who didn't grow up with music, the thought of reading music seemed like a huge hurdle. However, I discovered that it was easier than I thought and being able to read music helped me to understand larger concepts down the road. I also know that most students start playing the guitar because they want to learn their favorite songs, and I make sure to never ignore what my students want to play. Read More

I break my expertise into three different categories, which we can pull from and combine based on the situation. They depend largely on the student's age, experience and interests and are as follows: Music Theory (Piano Only): We explore the mathematics behind music; the elements of scales and modes, how these are used to construct chords and how they relate to one another. Heavily focused on the circle of 5ths/cycle of 4ths. Read More

I like to begin with understanding what the student wants to learn guitar for, whether it’s learning their favorite songs, they have an interest in joining a band, or they simply want to learn guitar for instance. From there I like to gauge the student’s level, and then set goals accordingly. For beginners, I start with fundamental material — instrument acclimation and adjustment, learning chord basics, and some sheet music introduction. Read More

I always explore different methods that might fit the age and personality of the student but for keyboard lessons I have found success with the Alfred Piano Method. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director. Beyond that I have a large library of supplementary music to expand the students interest with new styles and composers.I'm very flexible with the method books and after I get to know the student I can select a method that would work the best for instruction.
