Studied Classical Guiar at the College of William and Mary under Tim Olbrych

Jason Vieaux Master Class, William and Mary 2009

BS, Economics (William and Mary)

BS, Mechanical Engineering (Virginia Tech)

Overview:
I have been playing the guitar for about 20 years. I was self-taught through middle and high school, and then studied the classical guitar at the College of William and Mary, where I graduated in 2010. I've played in a number of jazz and blues ensembles at both the College of William and Mary and Virginia Tech, as well as played in rock and folk bands in New York and Virginia. I've also played the bass and the guitar in the orchestra pit for a number of local and community theater productions on the east coast, where I'm from. I have been contracted to play at a number of weddings and similar public events. Over the last 10 years, I've taught the guitar for a number of different age groups; group instruction of elementary-age children, as well as individual instruction of teens and adults. My personal musical playing interests include classical, especially arrangements of popular songs for the classical guitar, as well as blues-based rock.
EXPERIENCE

I've taught guitar for a number of years. I've had several private students in the Hampton Roads area, as well as in New York City, where I also taught group classes in an afterschool program. I have found that the two most important aspects of teaching are ensuring that students love the music theyre learning, and that they practice! These go hand in hand - if the love is there, the practice will come. Students who dont practice in between lessons are really limiting their potential, and grow at a fraction of the rate they could be. I enjoy teaching because it gives me a chance to answer questions that I don't normally ask myself, and it deepends my understanding of the instrument.

METHODS USED
I like to tailor my teaching to each student's interest. Everyone has their own reasons for learning the guitar. I am classically trained, so teaching the techniques and repertoire of the classical guitar is my forte. However, I am also well-versed in rock, blues, popular, and folk music. I believe that the most important thing a student can do is to learn music they truly enjoy, as this helps to ensure the student sticks with the instrument. Because of these beliefs, I typically structure my own curriculum based on the student's skill level, interests, and goals. This will include my own printed materials and curricula. Generally, if students would like to learn classical, I will draw from the Royal Conservatory of Music Repertoire and Studies series. For other styles, I begin with tablature of your favorite songs. I can teach any player to read sheet music, and that would ideally be done with beginners as well - however, if this is not in your interests, we don't need to go there.
LESSON STYLE
I think it's very important to write out your musical goals for each piece you work on. Setting simple, obtainable goals for each week is the key to real progression in the instrument. Learning the guitar is a process that takes time, but that time is absolutely worth it. The key to progress is simple: PRACTICE! Showing up to a lesson once a week will not get you where you want to be in terms of progressing on the instrument. Even if you can only carve out 15 minutes a day to practice, that will yield you consistent results. My teaching style is laid-back yet goal-driven. If you tell me you'd like to play x song or learn x scale, we can set a realistic goal for that, and a timeline in which to achieve it.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
