I am a very enthusiastic and passionate instructor! I am a composer, song-writer, pianist, and guitarist. I have been writing, performing and producing music for well over a decade in addition to teaching. I am also an experienced singer, though I have had minimal formal training in this. I have been singing songs and fiddling on instruments for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until my adult life that I finally pursued a thorough education. Read More

My style of teaching is personal and caring. Whether my students develop a desire to pursue music beyond our lessons, I care about their happiness and personal success in life. I develop a relationship with my students and I really enjoy it when I hear that they used a concept I taught them in our music lessons for something beyond music. I at least hope to instill a strong understanding and enjoyment of music in each of my students which they can share with the people in their life. Read More

I like to begin with understanding what the student wants to learn guitar for, whether it’s learning their favorite songs, they have an interest in joining a band, or they simply want to learn guitar for instance. From there I like to gauge the student’s level, and then set goals accordingly. For beginners, I start with fundamental material — instrument acclimation and adjustment, learning chord basics, and some sheet music introduction. Read More

I really enjoy helping high school jazz band students with their pieces. I help the students understand how to simplify their thinking on the songs to make it easier to play them. Read More

There is no baby talk in my lessons! Although they may have less of a musical vocabulary, I believe all students have an awesome musical ability, and I view my role is to guide and and support them from eye level. I treat all of my students like great musicians and I am simply holding the door for them. Lessons will start with a great warm up and then once it's been determined what the need is, we will set a goal. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
We have something we call the Charlie method. It is a simple method. Every time a student plays a piece of music, put a tally mark on the page to indicate practice. In addition, if there is a spot that is not going right, stop.. break that section down.. play that spot very slowly, note by note, separate hands if necessary. We go over this process together in lessons - it is called guided practice. Big picture practice is good, but small section attention (detail) helps get the song to where it needs to be. It also helps to hear how a piece should sound. This is called modeling.
When I was young, it was an expectation to practice 6 days per week - 30 minutes per day. That was just the way it was. If your child can handle that, it is still a good routine to get into. I have found that to be nearly impossible, even with my own girls when they were growing up.
Here is a compromise that worked for us. At the absolute minimum, play each song/exercise three (or four or five) times all the way through each day. Once finished with every piece, you are done. As the week progresses, each song should be played correctly with no mistakes three times in a row.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is indicating an early interest, I see no reason to wait. Tapping into that early passion and using it for a foundation toward rapid early progress is such a great resource that ofter gets overlooked. Student interest is a key motivator. Abilities on piano, ukulele and other musical instruments are only limited by the preconceptions of the player. In other words, there are no rules for learning and progress. My own twin daughters started piano lessons at age two - with another instructor, I might add. I have learned through my own experience and observations that it is often best for teacher parents to lovingly support but perhaps not be the main educator for their own children - but that is a whole 'nother discussion.
When will I start to see results?
Right away. I would leave this answer right here, but the field will not allow for a short answer. Students must feel progress or their interest will quite possibly quickly fade. We quickly learn skills and songs that will showcase their talent early on. I have had kids play for a scheduled recital after only one or two lessons in the past. I do not do that unless that child feels okay about doing so, but it has happened. Results vary from student to student, but progress and results come with each session. Home practice can really have a positive effect on the rate of progress.
