I blend the tried-and-true poise of classical technique with holistic approaches to satisfy two purposes: 1) the traditional desire to hone skill with practice and discipline, and 2) the psychological development of the student's independent musicianship. Music without expression is only sport. While technique, exercise, rigor, and history are essential in order to develop the deepest possible understanding of music, I aim to go beyond this to shape the independent expressionism of each student. Teaching is my favorite thing to do. To help someone grow in their ability to play is really rewarding. I ask the student questions about what they want to learn and structure the lessons around that as well as give them information so they can converse intelligently with other players. The confidence a student gains as they work hard on a challenging assignment and truly get it - this will help them throughout life no matter what they may pursue. Read More

My teaching experience began in Webster, South Dakota as their high school band director for 11 years. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. Then I was fortunate to teach my last 11 years in beautiful southern California where I taught instrumental music at elementary to high school levels. Read More

I have been playing the guitar for about 20 years. I was self-taught through middle and high school, and then studied the classical guitar at the College of William and Mary, where I graduated in 2010. I've played in a number of jazz and blues ensembles at both the College of William and Mary and Virginia Tech, as well as played in rock and folk bands in New York and Virginia. I've also played the bass and the guitar in the orchestra pit for a number of local and community theater productions on the east coast, where I'm from. Read More

As discussed in "My Methods" I value our time together and want each student to get the most out of each lesson. I work with students to help them learn what they want to. Teaching to me is not a "one size fits all" deal. Different people have different desires and levels they want to get to musically. Some people want to learn music theory and the "why" behind music. While in college I experienced teaching from a different point of view as I assisted with tutoring fellow students in subjects like Ear Training, Theory, and Arranging. I find that the understanding of these music fundamentals creates a comfortable place like a home for a young musician to live in, and when they explore new and exciting sounds they leave the comfort of their "homes" and find things that end of defining their own sound and style. I started teaching the guitar shortly after high school. The first lessons I taught were through the music studio where I first learned to play the guitar. I've taught both group and private lessons, and have experience with students of all ages. I love to find music that my students are excited about, and I feel that music should be about fun and dedication. I'm all about playing with other musicians, so make it a point to find music that I can play with my students. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
We have something we call the Charlie method. It is a simple method. Every time a student plays a piece of music, put a tally mark on the page to indicate practice. In addition, if there is a spot that is not going right, stop.. break that section down.. play that spot very slowly, note by note, separate hands if necessary. We go over this process together in lessons - it is called guided practice. Big picture practice is good, but small section attention (detail) helps get the song to where it needs to be. It also helps to hear how a piece should sound. This is called modeling. When I was young, it was an expectation to practice 6 days per week - 30 minutes per day. That was just the way it was. If your child can handle that, it is still a good routine to get into. I have found that to be nearly impossible, even with my own girls when they were growing up. Here is a compromise that worked for us. At the absolute minimum, play each song/exercise three (or four or five) times all the way through each day. Once finished with every piece, you are done. As the week progresses, each song should be played correctly with no mistakes three times in a row.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If your child is indicating an early interest, I see no reason to wait. Tapping into that early passion and using it for a foundation toward rapid early progress is such a great resource that ofter gets overlooked. Student interest is a key motivator. Abilities on piano, ukulele and other musical instruments are only limited by the preconceptions of the player. In other words, there are no rules for learning and progress. My own twin daughters started piano lessons at age two - with another instructor, I might add. I have learned through my own experience and observations that it is often best for teacher parents to lovingly support but perhaps not be the main educator for their own children - but that is a whole 'nother discussion.

When will I start to see results?
Right away. I would leave this answer right here, but the field will not allow for a short answer. Students must feel progress or their interest will quite possibly quickly fade. We quickly learn skills and songs that will showcase their talent early on. I have had kids play for a scheduled recital after only one or two lessons in the past. I do not do that unless that child feels okay about doing so, but it has happened. Results vary from student to student, but progress and results come with each session. Home practice can really have a positive effect on the rate of progress.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm.
