I've had students ranging from 12 years to 50+. All of them have been the same. They all need specific individual teaching instruction with someone who can discern their needs and learning speed. I've taken many lessons with many different instructors in my beginnings of playing guitar. Each teacher found different areas in which I was lacking practice. I have learned from my mistakes and now use them to my advantage by knowing what to look for in my students. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my days of study, as I began teaching private lessons part time 12 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 10 years as well as doing workshops in different countries. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the singing or instrument. I have been teaching guitar lessons for about three years both online and in person. I have taught people who were 7 years old to about 50 years old. I love discovering what works for each person and what each individual wants to accomplish by receiving lessons. I also like to expand their goals to new possibilities. I like to engage students with music they already know while also presenting music to them that can help improve their skills, and they might also find enjoyable. Read More

I start out my beginning Guitar students learning the "open string chords" - I teach my students how to tune their guitars in addition to identifying the note names of each open string - I teach my students "chord progressions" (using the "open string chords") - I get my students playing songs as quickly as possible - i ask my students "what songs they would like to learn?" and proceed to teach them those songs - After my students have learned the "open string chords", i progress to teaching them "barre chords" - I teach my students how to use a "capo" Read More

My methods are specific to a student's goals. For beginners, I usually like to use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series to get them reading music and playing guitar in the first (or open) position. Beginners need to learn fundamental music theory, such as the major scale and how to build chords. Intermediate students that already understand basic theory usually desire to learn the techniques and vocabulary specific to a certain genre. Read More

I am a musician at the heart of it all. Ever since I was a youngin' I've always had a melody or beat going in my head. I started playing guitar at age 11 and took lessons for about 6 months. After that most everything was self taught or came from experience with playing with others. I picked up drums about age 14 and am very comfortable and confident on both instruments 13+ years later. I cater my teaching curriculums to the student's interest and proficiency level. The first lesson would involve a discussion about what initially drew the student to the guitar, what genres they love, and what they hope to get out of the class. Next, we will go through the fundamentals, as appropriate for the student's skill level. After we've established a clear vision and certain rhythm of doing things, I would assign 15-20mins of warm-ups for each lesson -- tailoring the warmup exercises to specific techniques that the student wants to improve in.
