Depending on the level the student is at I will work with them where they are at and what is needed. If a beginning student I will usually start off with working on scales and use visual tools such as books to help aid the process. Repetition, and uncovering blocks to learning.. Learning simple songs that take s a few days at most to master, in turn, creates confidence. Music Theory and ear training are in the later stages of education, as i feel one of the most important steps is to learn "by rote". For all students from beginners to adults I use Alfred's Piano books as they are very transparent and easy to follow. I also strongly believe that even beginner students as early as 4 can learn scales and chords even though many teachers don't introduce such things until they reach an older age and have more experience. It is very apparent to me that many teachers under estimate how truly brilliant children are and how they can soak up material much more quickly at a younger age. Read More

For beginners I like to start with Essential Elements 2000, although this book isn't specifically written with trumpet in mind, I do I want to get students making music as soon as possible and EE 2000 is a great start. As students advance I use some of the standard trumpet method books such as - Clarke Technical Studies, Arbans Complete Method for Trumpet, I also write out exercises that can't be found in books but feel will help the student progress. The main methods used for students who want a more technical approach would be Suzuki, for those who want to learn their favorite songs we would use guitar tablature. Modern Guitar; Mel Bay is a very simplistic method for those who don't want to be bombarded with too much technique and have a less complex approach in their development.
