I like to start off with all my students--whether adult or child--by finding what music they are passionate about. I then use that information to create a practice routing/repetoire that will drive each individual to practice and grow as a musician. I encourage my students to not only practice often, but practice corectly. After all, practice does not make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect. Read More

I began my guitar studies at the age of 12. A contemporary of the Tarrega School, I have taught and performed regularly as both soloist and ensemblist throughout my career. In 2012, I earned my Bachelors Degree in music performance from the University of Nebraska Omaha while studying with classical guitarist Hadley Heavin. Upon graduation, I was awarded scholarship and teaching assistantship to attend the Lamont School of Music where I am currently finalizing my Masters of Music Performance. Read More

From there I walk through how to learn the first song. For intermediate students, among many lesson objectives, I introduce scales, a focus on right hand technique, some composition, and an introduction to music theory. For advanced students, I introduce more complex chords (like barre chords, extended chords, common jazz chords), complex melodic technique, higher-level music theory, and composition. Aside from my basic lesson structure, I’d like the student to direct lessons too, whether it’s picking a particular song they would like to learn, playing a particular style, or come with any questions whatsoever. My teaching experience began in Webster, South Dakota as their high school band director for 11 years. I was then invited to move back to my college town of Brookings, South Dakota to be their middle school band director. I moved to Sioux Falls and taught in the Catholic School System for a number of years. Then I was fortunate to teach my last 11 years in beautiful southern California where I taught instrumental music at elementary to high school levels. Read More

As a music instructor I strive to help my students learn as much as possible while harvesting a love of their instrument and the music they play on it. I graduated from the University of North Florida in 2009 with a Bachelor's in Music Performance. I have been teaching music for ten years, and learned from some of the best at my time in college. I have had the oppurtunity to play Carnagie Hall, tour the country, and perform witha multitude of different acts. Read More

I always start with new students by assessing their level. For most beginner students, I introduce open chords and basic single note playing, eventually leading to chord progressions and basic classic rock riffs. Beyond this, I always tailor my teaching to a student's tastes, as I know the best way to engage a student and keep them excited is to show them how to play their favorite music! If and when students become interested, I love to incorporate music theory into my lessons, alongside the technical aspects of instrumental technique. Read More
