In addition to partimento, I use other traditional methods. For beginner students who are children, I typically start with the James Bastien method. I like this method because it combines reading and playing the piano from the very beginning in a well-structured progression. Then it introduces important new concepts with fun (if charmingly old-fashioned) songs designed for teaching. As the student progresses, I like to use Hanon exercises for developing finger strength, and classical repertory for use in performance. Read More

I actually taught me first guitar lesson around senior year of high school, as I had already been playing guitar for about 5 years by that point and had garnered a small reputation as a skilled musician. I continued into college, taking on piano students focusing on theoretical analysis and fundamentals. After college I continued freelance teaching and have had many students succeed in creating and working in their own way. Read More

With the small devotion of 30 minutes a day to your practicing, I can make a novice player become a good guitarist, and a good guitarist into a great player. For beginning pre-teen students, I most often begin with the Alfred Auberge method. For those who can already read music or have played another instrument, the Mel Bay method is a good start. For adults, I often use the Frederick Noad books Segovia Diatonic scales and Giuliani arpeggios. Read More

My teaching experience started once I began taking music lessons myself. I was alway very excited to share what I learned with my friends. I have been teaching professionally for five years, having had several students taking lessons for Trombone, Guitar, Piano, Music Theory and Composition. I have also taught group brass lessons as a teaching artist for the New York Pops' "Kids on Stage" program as well as the Corona Music Project. Read More

Effective music education is both developmentally and culturally appropriate: By working with the student to understand their interests, I hope to provide them with an experience that will enrich their musical and social life outside of the work we do together. Through infancy, I believe Music Learning Theory is effective for developing musical and linguistic skills. If a student in toddlerhood/childhood shows that they have a preferred way to express themselves musically, I will tailor lessons around the Kodaly (voice), Orff (instrumental), or Dalcroze (dance) philosophies. My teaching style depends on the student's age and ability. Student's at different levels and ages will need various approaches. For everyone, I try to be calming, supportive, and as fun as possible; there are differences for various ages. With very young students, it's important to be as supportive as possible; especially when learning new things that can often be frustrating. Having an environment of support is paramount to me in these lessons. Read More

Learning to play an instrument is a skill that can last a lifetime. The benefits of perseverance, resilience, and positive self-esteem are also powerful forces in a student's development. With that in mind, I create a safe where students feel comfortable working to improve their musicianship. By acknowledging progress, students are excited to push themselves to accomplish their goals in music! By taking this student-centered approach, my students are excited to grow on their instrument.
