I find that my teaching style is focused on harboring curiosity of music for the beginner student. It brings me joy to see a student go above and beyond because they research more to what I offer them on the page to help enrich their playing. I ask students what they most would like to work on or accomplish and help them set realistic goals with skill building exercises to practice. Read More

The first step of teaching an instrument to anyone is accurately finding out how experienced they are with the instrument. As far as beginners go, when I was taught piano I used Alfred's Basic Piano library, among other similar books. I felt nothing was forced or unnecessary with those books, and it gives a good opportunity to set a nice goal-oriented pace with moving on up in skill level all the way to the upper intermediate level. I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. I always teach proper technique, music reading, and eventually some music theory. If a student is just beginning, they need a method book to track their progress. I usually use Hal Leanord's guitar method. Besides this book, there should be a blank manuscript booklet for any extracurricular songs or concepts that aren't included in the book. Weekly lessons are ideal for building on the fundamentals, as any longer, the student may be memorizing bad habits or forget the proper way to play. Read More

My style is simple, friendly, no pressure and relational. I love to teach guitar. Again, if this isn't fun, you won't stick with it. If any instrument should be fun, it should be the guitar. All those guys on TV always look like they're having a blast. But before they got behind the camera, they put in a lot of practice time. So I'm going to reveal the big secret to becoming a good (or great) guitarist right here - for free. Read More

...role in an opera. For a good example of a coloratura aria, listen to the character Adele sing “The Laughing Aria” from Strauss’ Die Fledermaus or perhaps the most well-known, The Queen of the Night’s “Der Hölle Rache” from Mozart’s The Magic Flute.     Soubrette sopranos have a bright voice with a sweet sound that lacks the upper extension and athleticism of a coloratura voice. Soubrette roles are often played by young sopranos for two reasons in particular: first, young voices are better suited to the desired timbre of a soubrette. Secondly, soubrette roles often call for a singer to play ... Read More

Types of Saxophones

...types of saxophones in existence. Each one has its own qualities. There are four main types used in contemporary music. The more you become familiar with each saxophone, the more you’ll become aware of each of their unique tonal qualities. Soon you’ll be able to identify each type of saxophone from hearing recordings. For starters, though, you’ll at least be able to identify each one by how it looks. Many times at gigs, I’ve had people come up to me and misidentify the saxophone I’m playing (they’ll call my alto a tenor, or my tenor a baritone). If you’re brand new ... Read More
