For younger students I start with showcasing what they can achieve with practice and perseverance. I do that by showing my playing. Then we start with the chromatic scale so the fingers can get use to the strings and moving around the fretboard. Same with drums but we start with easy hits and patterns. For adults I would talk about what are their interest and goal in music (genre, style, job, etc) and go from there. Read More

I have a few books I've become fond of (such as Faber, Schirmer, Hal Leonard, etc), but I have gone months at a time using no books at all -- keeping students happy. Not everyone prefers the same approach, and while I can offer expert guidance for those who aren't sure what to do, one of my main goals is simply to experiment with students, an attitude I try to foster in them too: You can work and work on some particular piece or song, but if you did it for extrinsic purposes . . . Whether they want to concentrate on technique or just learning songs that they love and bring joy and/or the joy of playing music. Many students have expressed to me how much just strumming the strings on the guitar is relaxing and their escape from the hassles of life. However again its a committment to the instrument and music. Practice is a virtue but it does not mean it won;t be fun. Read More

I have been teaching for 9 years and have experience with a wide range of student ages and abilities. Ive had several students stay with me long enough to progress from the very beginning stages of learning piano all the way to a fairly advanced level. I love watching students learn and become better musicians. Many of my students start lessons on one instrument and decide they want to try another (usually piano and guitar) and I encourage this variety! Read More

I use the Suzuki method for strings. I was classically trained in this method. I find that this method is an excellent way for beginners to gain basic technique and learn at their own pace. It is also great for intermediate students as the transition into this method does not take long once I have evaluated the student's skill level. The most important part of what I teach is to HAVE FUN! Read More

After getting a clear idea, I begin to look over the basic fundamentals of the guitar with the student. We either do this through beginner exercises I know from books that I have used throughout the years to learn and teach or just basic general exercises that I may have in mind. Examples of these books include: Troy Stetina Series, Hal Leonard Guitar Method, etc... After that, we would slowly move our way through more fundamentals and even check out some basic music theory (notes on the fretboard, basic chords and finger positioning, beginner scales, etc...) For intermediate students, I usually ask the student to play one of the best pieces he or she knows. Read More

I began taking private lessons shortly after I joined the band program in middle school. I continued to take lessons all throughout high school and college. Shortly after graduating high school I was offered the position of drum instructor. During college I taught for several years as the drum instructor at Winter Haven High School. I also taught private lessons to a wide range of students during this time. Shortly after college I became the band director at McKeel Academy of Technology in Lakeland. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
