I have been teaching for the past 26 years and have had as many as 50 regular students a week. I have had several students who have gone onto earn college degrees in music, both inperformance and education. I teach students to read music and provide them a firm foundation in chord structure and music theory that will enable them to play diverse styles of music. Once a student achieves a certain level of compentency, I encourage them to bring music to their lessons that especially appeals to them so they can develop their talent and love of music in a way that serves them best. I don't take a one-size-fits-all-approach to my students. Children and adults have different needs. Even among children, the needs of a young child vary greatly from those of a teenager. I will use method books where appropriate, particularly with young children, but I've found that a more creative approach tends to lead to students having more fun, accomplishing more in the long run, and developing positive associations with learning a musical instrument. I began teaching guitar at 16 for several local music stores in the Baltimore metro area, and quickly took to working with a wide range students in a short period of time. The passion I developed for teaching the instrument at a young age pushed me to further branch out, and begin offering private lessons from my home studio several years later. In addition to this, I also pursued my own path to learning more about my instrument by attending the Community College of Baltimore County where I earned an A.A in General Studies with a concentration in music. In high school I won the MD Distinguished Scholarship in music performance, which allowed me to pursue a career in music performance. I attended UMBC and completed a music performance degree. Later I earned a degree in Music Education, and have been teaching in public school since 2003. I've taught privately, in after school Guitar Ensembles and Rock n Roll Workshops, as well as Life-Long Learning Classes.
