I use several different method books for teaching. The books I typically use are Alfred's Basic Guitar, Mel Bay's beginner books as well as Hal Leonard's melody books. I teach beginner students the basics of how to properly hold their guitar, hand and finger placement, and simple note reading and chords. I cater my lessons according to the students experience level. For beginners, I teach them a few chords, exercises and get them playing their favorite songs fairly quickly. This helps build some positive steps and motivates the student to keep playing. For more experienced students, I use the Berkley Guitar Method, teaching them chords, scales and simple songs which puts the theory into practice.
