As mentioned above, I like to begin with basic theory. Once the student has grasped the basic concept of half and full steps, major and minor note, flats and sharps, we can start practicing some tunes. In the beginning I try to incorporate 10 minutes at the beginning of every lesson, as well as some key finger exercises. Parallel to the theory and exercises, we will begin with the major chord finger positions, and then progress to minors, etc.. Read More

My experience goes back all the way to middle school. The first time I saw somebody playing a guitar I was surprised. I couldn't believe the melody that came out of it, and just how good it seemed the person playing was feeling. At the time I was about 11 years of age, when my mom bought my first guitar. I started playing very basic songs. Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones was the first song I learned, and I can remember like it was yesterday how hard it was for me to get used to carrying the guitar and the feeling of the strings in my fingers. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson, working on every aspect of music: Technique, Music Theory, Repertoire, sight reading skills in a fun a didactic way. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. Read More

I always like to know what is the goal of each of my students. What style or genre they like as well as if they are aiming to be a solo performer or part of a band or ensemble. I like to start students on method books such as Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, this will teach students basic music theory as well as how to read on a staff. If also like contemporary music, I will teach them how to read chords letters, so to play styles such as jazz, pop, rock and contemporary gospel music. Read More
