For beginners I usually start with a simple melody or riff. I love teaching Painting Black by The Rolling Stones because it is simple to play. Not only that, but it's a song that's easy to identify for most people's ear. I usually take my time allowing the student to learn. One or a few hours are enough to start learning the song. I really take a look at what the student needs to learn and what the student wants to learn because I've seen a lot of students giving up because the institution or teacher is giving to much theory and very poor practice. I try to balance those responsibilities to a point that the student will always be learning something new as long as I work on their motivation and consistency of keeping up so they can learn how to play anything they like and want.
