Growing up in New Orleans, LA, I have performed with many outstanding musicians in the area including Russell Batiste, Johnny Vidagovich and Ed Petersen. When it comes time to begin working with a student, I always ask them what is their dream, their vision, and what is their reason for picking up a musical instrument. Their goal doesn't have to be rock stardom but they have to want to learn! I encourage setting up realistic goals, and giving them tasks and tools to pick up along the way. For beginning students, I typically start with basic elements of Music: scales, melody, harmony and rhythm, with the interactions of musical instrument, e.g Guitar. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first performance. It is very important that lessons be fun as well as informative, and as soon as I am able, I like to develop musical, and technical skills within the context of real music, that the student enjoys. Of course for absolute beginners, we have to develop certain skills before we are able to do this but it is important to me, that any student always has material that they enjoy practicing, and that the learning process is never too abstract or needlessly sterile.
