Having fun is a necessary condition for learning, so I try to cultivate a fun, laid-back, no-pressure atmosphere in my lessons. Every student has their own particular set of strengths and weaknesses, goals and time contraints. I take the time to understand what each student is looking to get out of their lessons and custom-tailor a unique lesson plan for each student accordingly. I like the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series, for guitar. I also use scales, picks, fingerstyle methods, and backing tracks to help get the students up to speed on a song or a riff they'd like to learn. It's important to understand the background of music, so I tend to also teach students the structure of a 12-bar blues progression and relate it to songs of yesterday and today. I am a goal setter and overachiever so I like to work with the student to set goals that will not be discouraging. I believe that learning how to play an instrument/sing with others in an ensemble setting helps reinforce what we work on in the lesson. As a multi-instrumentalist, I enjoy finding songs we can eventually play together while implementing technique and structure. ive began teaching three years ago to my little cousins. after a couple weeks their abilities improved significantly. my aunt,impressed at their progress, refered me to some of her friends, and i began teaching adults as well as children. when a student is learning, i like to focus on exactly what is interesting to them, and show themthe concept to the point of understanding. if the student isnt having fun,then nobody wins! i really enjoy seeing mystudents compose their own original songs and eventually gain the confidence to perform. im always looking for any students who wish to better their understanding of music regardless of ability or age. For younger students I like to start at the beginning; how to properly hold the instrument, how to tune the instrument, the layout of the fretboard (scales), a healthy repertoire of level appropriate music, etc. As students advance, however, I will introduce Theoretical concepts (Ear Training, Harmony, Modes, etc.) and a more detailed repertoire of music that the student is fervent about learning.
