My teaching style and approach to guitar instruction in particular starts by first assessing the wants and needs of the student. What does the student 'want' to learn? What does the student 'need' to do to achieve these wants. What will make the student most enthusiastic about the guitar? What will keep them enthusiastic and motivated to practice? What do they love about the guitar and what inspires them musically? Read More

I've held a variety of teaching positions since then that have enriched my abilities and experience as a teacher both privately and in the classroom. This includes being the Jewish Music Specialist and song leader for four different camps over the years, show directing at School of Rock, and single-handedly implementing the music program for Heketi Charter School in 2017-2018. Last but certainly not least, the transition to online formatting due to the COVID-19 pandemic has forced me to explore new pedagogies and business models alike. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

My teaching methods can be defined by a few words patient, fun, and above all, flexible. I believe maintaining great flexibility is the greatest way of making sure a student is not only learning at a great pace, but enjoying their journey as well. As this is the case, I create individual custom lesson plans for every single student I teach. For example, with younger students, I will generally try to make sure they are engaged and having as much fun as possible learning the instrument, this could come in the form of focusing on (at first) popular riffs or songs that the student would know and enjoy learning. I love sharing my knowledge with others. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a student acheive their musical goals. I like to keep my lessons fun and interesting. I try to create a fun but realistic experience to ensure that my student's interest is maintained while progress is achieved. I also welcome feedback from my students to cater to each individual's style and abilities. This helps me be more reflective and aware of each student's process. Read More

Classes are customized per the student's individual needs. For some students, this means a standard repertoire: Schradiek, Scevcik, Hrimaly for violin. Hanon for piano. But for others, they would do better with a less formal approach. In all cases, the use of the ear is fundamental and primal. We will learn how to hear, and how to listen for timbres and intervals. (Basic interval training will be a part of everyone's lesson, as there's really no way around that.) Some students are intimidated by the classical repertoire, and the demands the classical tradition places on musicians. Read More
