My teaching philosophy revolves around a holistic approach to music education. While technical proficiency is important, I also emphasize the significance of musicality, interpretation, and understanding the composer's intentions. It's not just about playing the notes; it's about conveying emotions and telling a story through each piece. I encourage my students to explore various musical styles, experiment with their creativity, and develop their own unique musical voice. As a composer I am capable of writing and arranging, on the spot. Read More

Depending on where the student is on their development, and which instrument: Guitar - I typically try and start with fundamentals such as how to hold your instrument.. where in the fret to press and make it sing and sound correct. I usually give them a couple simple, one or two string ditties to practice. Then I usually go over some of the basic, commonly used chords and have the student practice on making sure that they can hear all the correct strings ring when they strike the chord. Read More

I've found that being flexible and adaptible is most important to me, as everyone learns in a different way. I place a lot of importance on following student interest and goals as well, since it doesn't matter how great your instruction is if you're bored and don't want to keep playing. I think every student should get as much out of their lesson experience as they want, whether that means a more casual experience where you're not practicing too much throughout the week, or holding my student more accountable if they express more ambitious goals. My methods are specific to a student's goals. For beginners, I usually like to use Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series to get them reading music and playing guitar in the first (or open) position. Beginners need to learn fundamental music theory, such as the major scale and how to build chords. Intermediate students that already understand basic theory usually desire to learn the techniques and vocabulary specific to a certain genre. Read More

Experienced in teaching, performing, composition and recording, I offer tailor-made lessons to the students' individual wants or needs. Each lesson will be accompanied by written examples of the material gone over in our lessons, in notation or tablature, depending on the students' request. During our first lessons I will assess the students' level of skill and adjust my lesson plan from there, whether this involves basic technique, knowledge of the fretboard, knowledge of theory, music reading or vocabulary. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with CAGED System. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance looking into different genres such as RnB, Blues, Rock, Pop, Jazz. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. 5 minutes of warm up, 25 of theory, 20 of repertoire and 5 of talking about the next class. I have been a teacher for the last 7 years: having worked at after-school programs, I have learned how to understand the psychology involved in teaching and how to get students motivated but sparkling their curiosity based on their personal experiences. I encourage students to practice on a consistent basis for as much time as they can, but most importantly, I encourage them to listen. The art of listening is much understated in music education at times and is really what made a difference in my playing, so I like to include listening exercises that go along with technique in order for the student to develop a well-crafted musicianship.
