Overview:
Originally from Canada, I moved to Los Angeles in 2014 with my wife and 2 young daughters to escape the cold Canadian winters! I have extensive performing and recording experience and am always enthusiastic about bringing this knowledge to every lesson no matter what level a student is at. I have toured with Grammy award winning artist Sarah Mclachlan and have played on the Tonight Show, Ellen, Good Morning America and many other shows..... I teach a variety of styles and have a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of British Columbia.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught guitar for 25 plus years in a variety of settings, in students homes, private schools, studios, and colleges, I have also been teaching music production on Logic Pro X as well as Songwriting for the past 5 years. I like to make lessons fun and I focus on practicing technique and building chord vocabulary through learning songs with less focus on boring exercises and theory; unless of course the student is interested in that. I teach jazz, rock, classical guitar, contemporary pop, funk, soul and R&B. We will learn at your pace with a comfortable and relaxed approach. I am patient and friendly and enjoy teaching students in whatever style that they are drawn to.
METHODS USED
Each lesson is personalized to the students needs. Their level, age and abilities, type of style that they are interested in learning, as well as how much practicing that they can commit to a week. I also like to incorporate music technology into teaching guitar. By using drum loops for instance and getting students to play chords and rhythm patterns along with loops, makes things more fun and dynamic! If a student wants to learn how to read, we will usually start with a simple method book as well as incorporating TAB into the lesson.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style and approach to guitar instruction in particular starts by first assessing the wants and needs of the student. What does the student 'want' to learn? What does the student 'need' to do to achieve these wants. What will make the student most enthusiastic about the guitar? What will keep them enthusiastic and motivated to practice? What do they love about the guitar and what inspires them musically? I find that most of the time it comes down to learning songs or pieces that students have always wanted to learn or aspire to learn. Building a repertoire of music is a goal that I strive to do in my approach to teaching. My style and approach is to now make learning songs fun and challenging and always being engaged in the process.

We are so excited that Joe is able to help our grandson with his guitar. Justin, age 17, has leukemia and cannot go to school and the guitar is a great diversion. Joe comes to the house and has helped Justin with his love for the guitar and greatly improved his playing. He is a patient and fun instructor.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
