I began giving guitar lessons around the age of 15. I was eventually hired as an instructor at GuitarWorks in Greenwood, Indiana where my teaching experience blossomed. I was able to work with five year olds to fifty year olds of all skill levels and musical interests. This greatly broadened my approach for each individual student to tailor my lessons according to their interests and goals. As I know from my own experience, an instructor can most certainly become a great influence and role model to their students. Read More

I've been teaching people guitar since I was a teenager. I taught several of my friends how to play guitar or to play certain songs. Later, I began to teach from my home and eventually was offered a job in a music store. I've given thousands of lessons since I began teaching. I think it's important to teach students songs as quickly as possible while introducing some fundamentals like counting and giving them a number of different strumming patterns to work with. Upon a student's evaluation every lesson with any student should form it's own branch or life of it's own. Music is a passionate expression. I help students understand their instruments. Self expression, individualism, and self composition are traits I sought as a student and musician. My joy as a teacher, instructor and mentor is seeing the excitement someone achieves when they finally feel the "got it" or are starting to connect the dots. Read More

I always strive to be as patient as possible with my students. I do my best to tailor the pace at which we move through material to the specific student I am teaching. This is much more feasible in individual lessons as opposed to the more structured and scheduled group classes I teach. Both technical exercises and new pieces of music are approached slowly and methodically at first, in an effort to ensure each student has a complete understanding of the purpose of exercises, or what is occurring in a particular passage of music. I provide all music work sheets that we learn from that involve chords, scales, tabliture, notes...etc. Music is based upon the students current skill set, and what their interests are pertaining to music. The overall goal is to further develop musical talent at an appropriate pace in a comfortable teaching environment, that allows the student ask questions, try new things, and explore their insturment in ways they may not have imagined before. For piano, I typically use the Faber Piano Adventures Series; however, I am open to other method books as well. The Faber series has theory, technique, lesson, and performance books, each with different skills and techniques to learn. I find that those books offer the most comprehensive learning. In addition to the Faber books, I also utilize online worksheets for supplemental learning. For guitar, I typically use online worksheets and chord sheets, and from there, I encourage students to purchase specific guitar books they are interested in (for example, Disney books, classic rock books, Beatles books, etc.). I have been teaching on and off since 2010 and now teach almost exclusively from my home studio in Bloomington, IN. I've had the experience of teaching everyone from 4 year olds to advanced adult students and implemented various teaching methods for the many different minds learning styles. I always liked to look at the art of music like learning a language so I have since learned to create individualized lesson plans for my students that gives students plenty time to "speak", that is learning the fundamentals, phrases, and tools to share their personal story and to study the vast pedigree of music that has come before them.
