To that end, I may have the student come up with a hook, write a poem, or even an idea for a song about something that is meaningful to them. I approach teaching as an avenue to inspire others. Making mistakes are just as important as playing something perfect. I like to stress that perfection is not the goal but feeling good from playing your instrument is. It is very important for my students to practice outside of lessons.
