While reading the notes and rhythms is obviously important, understanding why those notes, rhythms or markings are in the music will help students develop and learn musicianship skills that are often overlooked. Beyond this though, I believe students who have a firm grasp of how music theory, music history and musical style combine can play with greater musical understanding and expression. Once my student is able to grasp basic fundamentals and a healthy proper tone and technique, I will then be able to incorporate solo repertoire for future recitals and contests.
