I was born in Cwmafan, South Wales, UK.into a house where the Welsh Language was spoken and sung. I was educated in Sandfields Comprehensive School, Hull then Cardiff Universities, where I studied with renowned Welsh composer Alun Hodinott. I taught in the London School system for several years. I emigrated to the USA in 1975, living and performing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and then moving to Phoenix in 1989. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to create independent musicians capable of creative thinking and musicality long after they have left my studio. While reading the notes and rhythms is obviously important, understanding why those notes, rhythms or markings are in the music will help students develop and learn musicianship skills that are often overlooked. I teach because I love to share the knowledge that I have obtained through my personal experiences and apply them to my students. Nothing is better than seeing my students improve on a weekly basis! I am patient, fun, and motivating towards my students. I respect that everyone learns at their own pace.
