I began teaching part time when I was in college. After moving to Dallas, I continued to teach part time while attending graduate school. Upon graduation, I began teaching full time during the day at public schools and evenings in my own studio. As a product of "the system", I generally teach "the system". By that I mean that in the education system here in Texas has been teaching this same way for years and years. After a year or two learning the fundamentals, scales and phrasing, then one gets to study the Ferling etudes for region band and a few basic solos for solo and ensemble. I use the Mark Thomas flute books for beginner through the 2nd year. In the first year, I typically teach basic fundamentals of scales and playing the full range of the instrument along with basic flute literature. Once these are complete I transition into the Anderson studies and more advanced literature. Allison is a flutist from Miami, FL, who has been playing since she was 9 years old. A graduate from University Miami with several scholarships, as well as finishing up her Master's under scholarship from University of North Texas, she has studied with some of the top instructors in the country. Her primary teachers are Trudy Kane, Mary Karen Clardy. She just recently finished a Teaching Fellowship at UNT, where she was responsible for teaching undergraduate non-performance majors (music ed and pre-music) and jazz saxophonists how to double on the flute. I began teaching flute lesson when I was a sophomore in high school in 2010 by helping middle school students, as well as other high school students, to prepare for band auditions. I taught throughout my time in college as well. I took a short break after graduating with my master's but have since returned to teaching in the Rockwall area.
