I have studied several approaches to teaching including Orff, Montessori, and Suzuki. I love to seek out new ways to effectively instruct my students. In music learning, I believe that listening is of utmost importance. One must internalize and interact with the music they hear so that they may develop a concept for what they would like to play. From there, students work with me to allow their musical voice to come through their instrument. Read More

Since the age of 11, Anna Kate has held a tremendous passion for classical flute. It was her junior year of high school when she decided to pursue a career in music and started her journey by joining the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestra, which toured in France, performing at large concerts in various cities. Subsequently she was accepted to the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts High School to further advance her studies in flute, requiring extensive time commitments of practicing five plus hours per day. During both my doctoral and masters degrees, I worked as a Teaching Assistant in the flute studio. Along with teaching private lessons to undergraduate students, I have experience leading studio classes/group lessons, technique/scale classes, and I designed a semester-long class titled, Teaching Technique through Repertoire, which I later presented as part of a pedagogy project. In Texas, I had the opportunity to provide lessons at a middle school through the Lubbock Independent School District, where I taught both individual and group lessons. Read More

For beginner students, I try to get them to learn a song by the first lesson. Eventually, I start them off by focusing on technique (learning notes and scales), tone development, etudes, and repertoire. Efficiency of effort in the fingers, usage of air, and holding of the body in order to produce a beautiful sound is a top priority. I believe the connection between the mind and body is very important, and you will find me often asking questions to engage the students in being aware of what they are doing as they are playing. I always explore different methods that might fit the age and personality of the student but for keyboard lessons I have found success with the Alfred Piano Method. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director. Beyond that I have a large library of supplementary music to expand the students interest with new styles and composers.I'm very flexible with the method books and after I get to know the student I can select a method that would work the best for instruction. My teaching experience began in 2008, when I began teaching private lessons on various instruments, on voice, and on conducting. I later went on to teach band and choir at Cedar Bluff High School in 2011. After this, I volunteered as the band director at Valley Head High School in 2014. I have enjoyed every moment of teaching music and have taken so much from the experiences that I've had. If I was to emphasize anything about learning the art, it would be the understanding of interpretation and how to make any music into something that is uniquely yours. Read More
