For beginning students I typicaly start with a introduction book like Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1 for younger students, and Solo Guitar Playing book 1 by Fredrick Noad for older and experienced students. Once fundamental techniques are acquired, I introduce repertoire suited for each student and they can participate in a performance. For older students I will work on the music they are interested in and integrate challenging material accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun. Read More

I have been playing the guitar for about 20 years. I was self-taught through middle and high school, and then studied the classical guitar at the College of William and Mary, where I graduated in 2010. I've played in a number of jazz and blues ensembles at both the College of William and Mary and Virginia Tech, as well as played in rock and folk bands in New York and Virginia. I've also played the bass and the guitar in the orchestra pit for a number of local and community theater productions on the east coast, where I'm from. Read More

I blend the tried-and-true poise of classical technique with holistic approaches to satisfy two purposes: 1) the traditional desire to hone skill with practice and discipline, and 2) the psychological development of the student's independent musicianship. Music without expression is only sport. While technique, exercise, rigor, and history are essential in order to develop the deepest possible understanding of music, I aim to go beyond this to shape the independent expressionism of each student. I always explore different methods that might fit the age and personality of the student but for keyboard lessons I have found success with the Alfred Piano Method. Instrumental lessons usually follow the method book that is selected by their school band director. Beyond that I have a large library of supplementary music to expand the students interest with new styles and composers.I'm very flexible with the method books and after I get to know the student I can select a method that would work the best for instruction. I began teaching guitar part time in late high school to just a few students. During college, I expanded my student base to include up to 30 students per week. I also have plenty of experience teaching group lessons of up to 25 children in both lesson and rehearsal formats. I prefer to teach my students using a jazz sensibilty applied all types of music. This brings about a well-rounded and open-minded perspective on both writing and performing in all genres. Read More

It is important to me that each student learns at their own pace when I teach. I dont want to force things upon students that they arent ready for, or dont want to do. Because of this, most of my curriculum is based around music of the students choosing, so they keep engaged and wanting to keep learning. Through this, I will teach the theory aspect of the music they are learning to help give a better understanding of why things work the way that they do, and the why the way they sound that way. I love music. I still find joy and challenges every time I play. I began studying at a very young age and alot of things are imbedded in my soul. Listening is the most important gift we can give ourselves. Whether in music or in life we can all teach ourselves the gift of listening. I think experiencing the thing we call music is beyond theory. My time in school was nothing next to the thousands of gigs I have accumulated in my 45 years doing music. Read More
