I have played flute for over 30 years! I am currently a member of the Gulf Coast Flute Choir, with over 30 members. I absolutely love the learning process and helping each person reach their individual goals and fullest potential.
My approach to teaching varies with the age level of each student. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. For older children and adults, learning music notation and basic music theory for a full understanding of musical language are more important to get them to the level where they can learn any music that they want to play for fun. For students who wish to excel in their school band, a more practical approach with technique specific warm-ups and exercises seems to be the best in general.
For beginner students I find out their learning style before I assign them a method book. The method book I choose will depend on their learning style. As they progress I incorporate music that they are familar with and songs that they would like to play. For Intermediates and Advanced students I plan my lessons according to their interests and what they would like to achieve from taking lessons. I aim to please. If the student is happy I am happy too.
In 2000, I left medical school to pursue music and have never regretted the decision! I went on to receive my bachelor's in 2004 and master's in 2012, both in instrumental music education. I recently relocated to South Tampa after being a full time 4th-8th band director for 10 years in Chicago. I also taught kindergarten music and K-3rd group piano. I have been teaching private lessons on all instruments for 13 years, with an average of 10 students per week in my studio. I have taught private lessons to students from age 8 to 60, at all levels of experience. I especially love teaching beginners, at any age, to provide a well established basis of fundamentals, in order for those students to easily achieve great musicianship later on in their development.

The flute is a great instrument to begin in elementary school. Young flutists are able to progress quickly, and many school programs allow flute players to participate in both band and orchestra. Typically, Musika recommends waiting until age 8 before beginning flute lessons.
It is never too late to begin flute! We have many students who begin as adults. Our network of teachers have experience working with all ages and can work with you whether you are a beginner or advanced player.
On of Musika's unique offers is that we provide in-home lessons for no additional cost. This allows the student to save the time and money that would normally be spent traveling to a studio.
At the beginning level, renting a flute is the best option. For younger, smaller flutists, the student might consider using a curved head joint to make to the flute easier to hold. As the student progresses, consider purchasing a more advanced model with open hole keys and B foot joint.
Flute lessons will be tailored to the specific goals of the student. Every student will be introduced to music theory and the process of reading music. New flutists will learn how to hold, assemble, and clean the instrument; how to correctly blow into the instrument; proper articulation and fingering; and how to have fun playing the flute!

Cory is simply the greatest instructor ever! His 30 year plus teaching experience along with his knowledge of ever longer in music composition and performance make a real difference if you're in for learning the right way. Thank you Cory for teaching me not only the chords but also the history behind it and awesome tricks on getting better faster ;)

Unbelievably Awesome. My daughter is a beginner and has some special needs. Justin is more than patient and helpful while being completely thorough and pushing her (in a good way) to try harder. He is encouraging and teaches effectively. I am very pleased. More important, so is my daughter. Thank you Musika! So grateful we found your service and connected with Justin. We highly recommend him.

Steve is an excellent instructor. My son has really connected with him and he is learning the guitar quickly. Steve is patient and never rushes through a lesson in order to make it fit within the session time limit. In addition, before he leaves, he writes notes and instructions for my son to follow. By the next lesson, my son is confident in what Steve has taught him. Most importantly, Steve builds my son's confidence in his own own ability and progress after each lesson.

Andrew is very encouraging and uplifting, but also isn't afraid to tell you your weaknesses. Andrew also is super awesome with scheduling. Fits around your schedule all the time. He really knows what he is doing and can help you reach your goal in the time you would like to. Couldn't have gotten a better teacher, who continually helps me grow and pushes me.

I really like her. And as an adult student, a good teacher who keeps the pace up but still keeps it reasonable in terms of difficulty is really hard to find. She does a great job of explaining little detail things in terms I (as a musically challenged human) can understand. I'm having a blast! 10/10 would recommend!

Henry is teaching my daughter how to play piano. Henry is an excellent teacher, we really like and appreciate him. His teaching style works very well for my daughter, she is comfortable which makes learning enjoyable. Henry is very patient and I can see that he is passionate about teaching music. Great teacher for sure.

Angela is a phenomenal teacher. She is full of charisma and is a joy to work with. Most of my experience with her has been focused on working in the Alexander Technique and she seems very knowledgeable in this study. I would highly recommend her to any prospective student. I have seen myself improve dramatically in a few short weeks with her guidance (and much practice of course!)

Rahsaan is an extremely talented player who relates really well with my teenagers. He has them both interested in learning. Given Rahsaan's expertise, it's clear that even though they are beginners now, they can learn from him for a long time to come. He's a real nice laid-back guy and both the boys really enjoy their time with him. I've been very impressed and pleased with the experience.

Melissa is very encouraging, positive, supportive and patient. She knows how to explain the technical details of flute and music notation to kids in a way that makes sense to them. She has been reliable so far turning up on time and calling if there is a need to reschedule. I would definitely recommend her to others.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
Are you sure that's your only availability? The more availability you easier it will be to arrange a teacher for you.
