I was educated in Sandfields Comprehensive School, Hull then Cardiff Universities, where I studied with renowned Welsh composer Alun Hodinott. I taught in the London School system for several years. I emigrated to the USA in 1975, living and performing in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and then moving to Phoenix in 1989. However, it is my goal to give students the tools to learn music on their own such as sight reading skills, daily practice tools, and practice strategies so they are trained to hear if something is wrong and know how to fix it when I am not present. For beginning students I teach out of whatever book they are using in their school program and if none then I provide my own material, so there is no cost for parents unless the student wants to learn music outside of band, which they purchase on their own. For beginning students, I am willing to work with them on the book they are using in school band. I also like to use other flute technique books, such as Rubank, Melodious etudes, and flute duets as well. When the student has developed a confident tone and technique, I will introduce solo repertoire that is at a comfortable level for the student, as well as eventuall getting the student to learn the beauty of collaborating with a pianist or other form of accompanist. For junior high and beginning students I like to go over proper embouchure, rhythm counting and creating a solid sound. After that's established I like to get started on technique exercises, scale practice and practice methods for their own benefit outside of lessons.
